About this design
福 (fuku) means good fortune. The daruma doll is weighted at its base, so whenever it is knocked over it rights itself — a symbol of perseverance, summed up in the saying nana korobi ya oki: fall down seven times, stand up eight. Plum blossoms, an early sign of spring, surround it.
A lucky gift for a new business, an exam, or anyone starting something new.
Part of Kage-e (Series 02): picture-led. ink silhouettes, made to be seen lit.
